Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri, a pragmatic
and down to earth leader of the people
of India, a fine statesman and an able
administrator, with the moral and
ethical attributes of a 'Mahatma' and a
person of impeccable integrity, was a
great soul dedicated to the welfare of
the common man. He was deeply patriotic
and courageous, having dedicated his
life to the service of the nation. His
commitment to the people of India was
exemplary. Lal Bahadur Shastri was born
in a poor family on October 2, 1904 and
through his grit, determination and
honesty he rose to the high position of
Prime Minister of India.
A firm believer in the social
responsibilities of business
enterprises, he looked at the economic
and social realities of Indian life with
a clear vision, never allowing his
judgment to be influenced by doctrinaire
or ideological preconceptions. In the
administrative sphere, he had original
ideas, and was an innovator with resolve
to give effect to new ideas. Shastriji's
tireless dedication to the cause of
improving the welfare of the Indian
people, is an inspiration to all those
who look to the future with hope and
confidence.
Shastriji felt the need for a responsive
and agile administration during his
tenure as Prime Minister of India, The
appointment of an Administrative Reforms
Commission to streamline Public
Administration was one among many steps
he took to make administration quick and
responsive. He simultaneously felt the
importance of developing high quality
institutions, which could provide a
stream of administrators and managers
for future. His vision was later
translated into reality when the Lal
Bahadur Shastri National Academy of
Administration was set up in Mussoorie

Minister of India, Smt. Indira Gandhi.

But for us there need be no difficulty or hesitation, no looking to right or left. Our way is straight and clear the building up of a social democracy at home with freedom and prosperity for all and the maintenance of world peace and friendship with all other nations. To that straight road and to these shining ideals we rededicate ourselves today” |

Messages from Shri Lal Bahadur Shastriji
"My meeting with Major Bhupendra Singh was touching. He is a brave officer. He suffered injury in every part of the body and blood oozed from every part. He could not even open his eyes. When he was told of my arrival in the hospital he opened his lips to say : "I am sorry, Sir, that I am unable to get up to show the respect due to my Prime Minister." I was overwhelmed to see him lying in that condition. Major Bhupendra Singh told me that he was not deterred by a hail of artillery fire. Despite injuries, he continued to fight and succeeded in destroying seven Pakistani tanks. His unit destroyed 31 tanks.
The deeds of his valour will be written in letters of gold in the history of the war and will continue to inspire generations. This spirit of sacrifice raises our national prestige and our morale.
I am not a man of war. How can I be one? I am so short. Unlike Lt. General Harbaksh Singh, I am not strong. I love peace and try to resolve disputes peacefully. But if there is aggression on our territory I will discharge my responsibilities fully. The nation will stand upto fight off aggression and defeat the aggressor. That is our firm resolve." |
